The 18th annual Kenny Classic was another great day of fun for the participants, and a record-settting day of support for the Barton Center. Despite threatening skies and light rain for about 15 minutes, nobody's enthusiasm was dampened as 128 golfers took to the challenging Hampden Country Club links in 32 teams. The conditions cooled off the Classic's hot scoring trend a bit, as 24 of the 32 teams shot par (72) or better, with 17 teams posting sub-70 rounds. Click here to see the 2011 KC Leaderboard.
The team of Tony Carra, John Digregorio, Gordie Forsberg and Lan Goodwin successfully defended their 2010 Championship, as they took home Low Gross honors once again, winning free and clear with their ten-under-par 62. It was the fourth KC title for "Lan The Legend," as he won KC II in 1995 when it was a stroke play event, and took a different team to the top of KC XII in 2005. The former chairman of the Barton Center Board of Directors has had his teams in the Top 3 in six of the last seven Classics. Three teams finished one stroke back in a tie at 63, and Second Low Gross by virtue of the card match went to the team of Dennis Booska, Bob Caouette, KC Findley, and Bob Provost - their sixth straight top three finish at the KC! Lee Craig, Bill Lawrence, David Plantier, Glenn Snyder Jr. took Third Low Net.
Low Net honors went to the team of John Landers, Brent Towle, Randy Towle, Gene Wilde, matching the Hampden record net score of 49, set just last year. Second Low Net (56) went to Steve Kenny Jr., Al Brigham, Jim O'Leary and Jeff Vorce as they took the silver in a card match with Joe D'Amario, Nancy D'Amario, Barry Henry and Bev Henry.
Steve Kenny Jr. also took home the Closest to the Pin Contest on #3 with a distance of 14'2", while Matt Kais captured the lucrative 50/50 prize Closest to the Pin Contest on #15 with a shot that stopped just three inches from the hole! In a new twist to an old favorite tournament contest, The Straightest Drives on #8 went to Martha Mensing and Adam Whitehouse.
Because of the threatening skies, The post-tournament party was held in the Club's beautiful banquet hall upstairs, and the dinner provided by the fine food service staff of Hampden CC was delicious. Thanks to the generosity of the participants and the many friends and sponsors of the KC, the Super Raffle prize table was incredibly stocked with more than 75 gift packages, ranging in value from $75 to over $300, and many folks walked away with nice raffle prizes. The silent auction was well-stocked, too, with many fine items up for bidding, including wonderful golf weekends at The Samoset Resort, Wentworth-By-The-Sea, and The Sagamore Resort, weekend getaway to Burlington, Vermont, a family fun weekend in Springfield, Mass., box seats for four for a Red Sox game, Lift tickets to Stowe and Smuggler's Notch with a Burton snowboard, great baseball and football autographed sports collectibles, and much more!
Thanks to all of you, we had a great time, and the event raised a KC record $18,000+ for the Robert J. Kenny Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Clara Barton Camp! Over the 18 years of its existence, the KC participants and sponsors have raised over $210,000 to help kids with diabetes. To all of you who were there - whether it was your first or your 18th time at the KC - WE THANK YOU!
